How to Choose a Pediatrician

If you are pregnant or if you just moved to the area, congratulations! Pregnancy, having a baby, and raising kids are the most exciting times in your life. Here are some things to consider when searching for a great pediatrician or if you’re not fully satisfied with your current pediatrician.

Where to Start
First, talk to your friends, neighbors, and colleagues with kids. Find out if they are impressed with their pediatrician and pediatrician’s office. Is it easy to email/text or call with questions and get appointments when needed? You can go online and read reviews and talk to your obstetrician for recommendations. Convenience is a huge factor when it comes to hours and availability and proximity to your home or work.

Schedule a Prenatal Appointment or Meet-and-Greet
Many pediatricians offer prenatal appointments or meet-and greets so you and your family have the opportunity to meet the doctor, ask questions, and get a feel for how comfortable you are. Some questions to ask are:

How easy/difficult is it to schedule an appointment?
How long is each appointment?
Can I email, text, or call you with questions when needed?
Do you see newborns in the hospital after birth and if so at which hospitals?
What happens after hours when my child is sick?

Perhaps the most important thing is the feeling you get when you meet and speak with your prospective pediatrician. This is someone you will rely on to help ensure that your family is on track for a life of good health, wellness, and school success. In addition, it is someone that you will trust to care for your child during illnesses and if any medical or mental health issues arise.
