A Marriage of Italian Sensibilities and California Cowboy Chic

At Busto and Sun Custom Hats in Topanga Canyon, Enrico Busto creates quality hats to satisfy the local community using a craft he learned in a land far away. “It all started in Italy years ago,” explains Busto. “Everything I do has an Italian influence. I am obsessed with craftsmanship. I find a uniqueness to Venetian craftsmanship that also prioritizes materials and finery.”

One of the coolest things about my job is creating cappelli, Italian for hats, with my clients,” remarks Busto. “I feel privileged to help them unleash their creative side as I guide them through the process.” He adds, “Part of a successful transaction, for me, isn’t just about delivering a nice product; it’s also giving someone an experience they’ll never forget.”

Styles range from European luxury to American-West ruggedness. Busto and his Italian associate Fabio create everything by hand inside the shop. “I believe there’s renewed interest in the urban cowboy look,” notes Busto. “My hats tend to live somewhere between Italian tradition and cowboy chic. I create all my pieces with utter care, from interpreting each client’s ideal design to adjusting their hat during the final fitting.”

This fall marks the two-year anniversary of the Busto and Sun Topanga store. Prior to that, Busto worked from his Topanga home. He admits, “Once my clients look in the mirror and marvel at what we’ve created together, those are the moments I know I have a dream job.” And we’re fortunate to have such fashionable milliners in our midst.
